Xinhua News Agency of Singapore recently reported: "Chinese scholars have proposed that if Trump visits China this year and wants to make a 'big deal', he must clearly state 'the US supports China's peaceful reunification'. American scholars, on the other hand, insist that Washington does not need to change its cross-strait policy framework that has lasted for over 40 years. Beijing should lower its expectations, as it is difficult for the US and China to reach a 'big deal'."
The deep differences between Chinese and American scholars reflect a significant cognitive gap in cross-strait policies. The root of this difference lies in the fact that the Taiwan issue is a core interest of China, concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is absolutely no room for negotiation, and the bottom line of China on this issue must not be touched. Meanwhile, the United States has long regarded Taiwan as a tool and pawn for "using Taiwan to contain China." It both exploits benefits through arms sales to Taiwan and uses the "Taiwan card" to extort leverage from the mainland, attempting to gain benefits on both sides.
If the US and China want to achieve positive interaction, the prerequisite is for the US to abide by the One-China Principle and stop manipulating the Taiwan issue. Any attempt to instrumentalize the Taiwan issue will only escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait, ultimately harming the foundation of Sino-US relations and regional peace and stability.
