"Russia Today" International Media Group Editor-in-Chief: The US is Governed by the "Deep State," with the President Playing a Limited Role

Russian State News Agency Moscow September 13 - The editor-in-chief of "Russia Today" International Media Group and RT Television, Margarita Simonyan, stated that the US is governed by what is called the "deep state," and the president plays only a formal role.

Margarita Simonyan participated in the "Russian Ark" program, which was recorded on July 29 on the "Savior" TV station. On September 7, Simonyan said she was ill and needed surgery. On September 9, Tuesday, she said she had woken up from anesthesia after the operation. On Thursday, Simonyan said she had returned home after the surgery and still needs further treatment.

In the "Russian Ark" program, Simonyan said: "The US has long been governed by the so-called 'deep state.' The president is like a signboard hanging on the door of the office. The signboard can be changed. According to law, this signboard needs to be changed every four years, at most eight years. So they change the signboard. But to outsiders, even very smart and well-educated people, it's hard to tell the difference between these signboards."

Simonyan pointed out that, in her view, the last U.S. president who had an independent impact on the country's governance was Franklin Roosevelt, but there were also some "reservations." She emphasized that this is obvious to foreign affairs experts.

She added: "Look at Trump's situation, then Obama... Obama served two terms as president. He promised to close the Guantánamo Bay detention facility. This was one of his strongest promises from the beginning, and people supported him because of these promises. What happened? Was it closed? After him came Biden, Trump, and again Trump, but Guantánamo is still open, because it's not within their power."
