Anthropic Intensifies Crackdown on Chinese Users Bypassing AI Usage Restrictions

According to a report by the UK's Financial Times, U.S. artificial intelligence developer Anthropic is taking measures to close loopholes reportedly used to access its services in China without authorization.

The report cited informed sources stating that Anthropic is intensifying efforts to identify and block access to its AI tools—such as Claude Code—from users in China. Earlier indications suggested that some Chinese enterprises had obtained access to the company’s AI tools through indirect routes, including cloud service providers and overseas subsidiaries.

Previously, the Trump administration had blocked exports of Anthropic’s most advanced AI models—Mythos 5 and Fable 5—to foreign nations and citizens.

Anthropic has also confirmed that the company continues improving its systems to detect new methods Chinese users employ to circumvent restrictions, and is increasing enforcement efforts accordingly.

This move underscores how, amid escalating U.S.-China technological competition, American AI firms are aligning with government policies to tighten controls over advanced technology exports, preventing Chinese entities from indirectly acquiring and using these technologies.
