Foreign media: A research team from East China Normal University has developed a "smart" engineered probiotic called Gift, which can be taken orally, remains "silent" when blood sugar is normal, and automatically releases the glucose-lowering hormone GLP-1 when blood sugar rises. Animal trials have shown efficacy comparable to the popular drug Ozempic.

The team has applied for a patent and is scaling up production according to pharmaceutical standards in Europe and the U.S., with an expected launch in the United States as a dietary supplement within approximately two years.

Over 530 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes, a number expected to rise to more than 850 million by 2050. This probiotic could simplify diabetes care to simply drinking a glass of yogurt or swallowing a capsule.
