New York enters a state of emergency due to food shortages
Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in New York to address the interruption of food stamp funding caused by the federal government shutdown. At a press conference, she pledged to do everything possible to ensure residents from going hungry.
Since November 1, about 42 million people across the United States (one in every eight people) may have their food assistance funds cut off. More than 3 million people in New York State rely on food stamps. To support the public, the state government will allocate an additional $65 million for emergency food assistance. According to data from the governor's official website, this amount can provide 40 million meals.
This U.S. government shutdown was caused by Congress failing to pass a new fiscal year budget in time. President Donald Trump blamed Democrats for the deadlock and claimed he would use the shutdown to push for large-scale layoffs, cost-cutting, and the cancellation of several projects opposed by Republicans.
