FT: Nvidia plans to set up a research and development center in Shanghai to further expand its market in China.

The CEO of the American chip giant Nvidia, Jensen Huang, arrived in Taiwan on Friday afternoon, May 16th, aboard a private jet. On the 19th, during his keynote speech at the Taipei International Computer Show (COMPUTEX), he may reveal the new location of Nvidia's expanded Taiwan headquarters. While the exact location of the Taiwan headquarters remains uncertain, a report by the Financial Times revealed that Nvidia is currently planning to open a research and development center in Shanghai, China.

Nvidia's headquarters are located in California, USA. The company dominates the cutting-edge chip market used in generative artificial intelligence (AI) models developed since the release of ChatGPT. Currently, the company's sales in China are being hindered by Washington's technology export restrictions. These restrictions were implemented during Joe Biden's presidency and continue under Donald Trump's administration.

According to Agence France-Presse, citing the Financial Times, Nvidia's new R&D center in China aims to meet the specific needs of Chinese customers while adhering to the technical requirements imposed by Washington. According to the same source, these teams will participate in global R&D projects such as optimizing existing products and will conduct research in specific fields like autonomous driving.

Agence France-Presse contacted Nvidia, but the company did not respond immediately.

The report stated that Nvidia's sales in China are expected to reach $17 billion by 2024, accounting for 13% of its global revenue.

AFP reported that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited China in April, during the height of Trump's tariff offensive. According to the Financial Times, Huang discussed this plan during his visit to Shanghai. A source cited by the newspaper said that the company is also currently pressuring the U.S. government to give it the green light.

Mystery Surrounds Nvidia's New Taiwan Headquarters

According to reports by the Central News Agency of Taiwan, Huang mentioned upon arriving in Taipei that Nvidia is growing rapidly with an increasing number of talented engineers. The office in Taiwan has become too small, necessitating the search for a new, larger office to accommodate the expanding team. Huang said the location of the new office has not been officially announced yet, and perhaps more details will be shared during his keynote speech on the 19th. Any location on the island of Taiwan is a potential option, and he does not want to spoil the surprise by revealing it now.

In addition, Huang revealed that he would have dinner with TSMC Chairman Morris Chang that evening, but declined to disclose the dining location.
