[Ukrainian Army Commander Resigns on Account of Mistake]
On June 1, Ukrainian Army Commander Mykhailo Drapalii announced on Facebook, "I have decided to submit my resignation from the position of Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Land Forces. This is a well-considered decision made by me based on my personal sense of responsibility for the tragedy at the 239th firing range, which resulted in the loss of our soldiers' lives."
Drapalii stated, "As a commander, failing to fully ensure the execution of orders; and failing to persuade or change attitudes toward personnel within the military are always the primary responsibilities of the command structure. Nepotism and exemption phenomena are the cancer of the army. I once tried to eradicate this phenomenon from the ground forces. But if such tragedies recur, it means that my efforts were insufficient. We cannot survive in a system that fails to learn lessons. Without summarizing experiences, changing attitudes toward responsibilities, and acknowledging mistakes, we will head toward destruction. There can be no development without personal accountability, and without development, there can be no victory. Only an army where commanders take personal responsibility for their soldiers' lives can endure; while an army where no one takes responsibility for losses will disintegrate from within."
On June 1, Russian forces launched a missile strike against a Ukrainian army training unit, resulting in 12 deaths and over 60 injuries.
