South Korean Media: China's BYD Subsidy to End Tomorrow… Only One in Passenger EV Category Excluded This Year

¬ Failed to score over 60 points, application deadline set for the 30th

It has been reported that starting from the second half of this year, China's BYD (BYD) has been excluded from the list of eligible recipients for electric vehicle subsidies. Among passenger electric vehicles, BYD is the only automaker that did not qualify.

On the 30th, the South Korea Ministry of Climate Change and Environment announced this news during the release of the results for the "Evaluation for Selection of Implementers in the Electric Vehicle Popularization Project," which was conducted among electric vehicle manufacturers and importers. For the first time this year, the evaluation assessed five criteria—technical development capability, contribution to supply chain resilience, response to environmental policies, sustainability of after-sales service and maintenance, and safety management—with a maximum score of 100 points. Only companies scoring above 60 points were eligible for certification as subsidy implementers. A total of 35 companies applied, with 27 meeting the standard.

In the passenger electric vehicle category, 10 companies—including Hyundai Motor & Kia, Renault, KG Mobility, Tesla, and BMW—were selected. In contrast, BYD was the sole manufacturer in the passenger EV subsidy category to be eliminated this year. Nine companies qualified in the truck category, and eight in the bus category. After completing all evaluation procedures on the 29th, the results were officially released on the 30th—the day before implementation.

However, BYD vehicles that had applied and been accepted by the 30th will still receive subsidies normally. The purpose of introducing this evaluation system is to ensure that manufacturers and importers contributing to South Korea’s electric vehicle ecosystem can benefit from subsidies. Yet, after the Ministry of Climate Change publicly disclosed the evaluation criteria in March, it faced accusations of favoring domestic vehicles over imported ones. In May, the ministry significantly lowered the qualification threshold—from a maximum of 120 points with a passing score above 80 points, down to a maximum of 100 points with a passing score above 60 points. As a result, BYD scored below 60 points in this round and failed to qualify for the subsidy program.
