French media: Russia attacks Ukraine, the land it occupies in 2025 is only slightly less than the first year of the war

AFP Kyiv, 2nd. According to a media analysis released today, Russia's gains in Ukraine in 2025 are second only to the first year of the war in 2022.

According to data analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the "Critical Threats Project," Russian forces occupied more than 5,600 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025, accounting for 0.94% of Ukraine's total area.

This figure includes areas controlled by Russia as claimed by Ukraine and analysts, as well as lands claimed by Moscow. It exceeds the total land occupied by Russian forces in the previous two years, but is far less than the 60,000 square kilometers occupied in the first year of the invasion.

Moscow has achieved better results than in any other year since the war began, thanks to its superior manpower and equipment.

Data shows that Russian forces made significant gains in November last year, occupying 701 square kilometers, while December saw only 244 square kilometers, the lowest month since March.

Ukraine faced great pressure from Russian fire and the battlefield, constantly making concessions to Russian forces.

US President Trump often complained that he, as a peace broker, did not receive the recognition he deserved. He has engaged in dialogue with both sides of the conflict, trying to end the war. However, so far, he has not obtained significant concessions from Russia.

Russia has occupied nearly 1/5 of Ukraine's territory and demands that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the eastern Donbas region in exchange for peace. Ukraine says that Russia has no interest in peace and deliberately sabotages diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war to gain more Ukrainian territory.
