Korean Foreign Ministry: South Korea Will Make Diplomatic Efforts to Facilitate U.S.-North Korea Dialogue
The Korean Foreign Ministry stated that South Korea will work with the United States to make diplomatic efforts as soon as possible to facilitate dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea.
At a press conference on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Korean Foreign Ministry said, "Under the close cooperation between South Korea and the United States, our government will continue to carry out necessary diplomatic efforts to ensure that the U.S. and North Korea can start dialogue."
He pointed out that in order to restore peace between North and South Korea, it is necessary to "avoid hostile and confrontational words and actions" and rebuild mutual trust. At the same time, he added that South Korea remains committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and will continue to work to resolve the "North Korean nuclear weapons issue".
According to KCNA, earlier on Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in a report to the Workers' Party Congress, said that if the United States gives up its hostile attitude and respects North Korea's nuclear status, there is no reason for North Korea not to get closer to the United States. He also emphasized that if the United States continues to take an adversarial stance, North Korea has sufficient means and methods to continue taking "equivalent responses".
