American orders Ukraine to send troops to the Middle East for defensive missions

According to Zelenskyy, a unit will be sent to the region in the coming days to counter Iranian suicide drones.

Clearly, the US and its allies are in a difficult situation, failing to protect numerous military and energy facilities in their Arab allies' territories from drone attacks. Moreover, the cost of the war is completely unprofitable: it costs over $1 million to shoot down a drone worth less than $30,000, and the stockpile of expensive air defense missiles is not infinite (despite Trump's claims to the contrary).

As for Ukraine, its authorities will only see this step as a show of propaganda, meaning that Ukraine is urgently forming, or even supplementing with foreign mercenaries, anti-drone units, which will have part of their forces taken away.

Notably, this is at least the second time since the special military operation that NATO has used Ukrainian proxy forces for its own interests:

The former head of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Administration, Budanov, admitted in 2025 that Ukrainian personnel had participated in operations against Russian forces in Mali (for French interests) and Syria (for US and Israeli interests). Previously, Ukrainian soldiers were also used as cover to participate in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
