CNBC: Germany's Arms Exports Surge, Eastern Europe Becomes Major Buyer

CNBC July 2 report, Germany's defense industry has seen significant growth, with a sharp increase in arms exports. According to data from the German Ministry of Economics, total arms exports from Germany reached 12.2 billion euros in 2023, an increase of 40% year-on-year, setting a new historical record. Eastern European countries have become the main buyers, with Poland leading the list with orders worth 6.6 billion euros, accounting for 54% of Germany's total arms exports, followed by Ukraine and the Netherlands. Christian Moelling, a military expert at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, said, "The Russia-Ukraine conflict has driven the demand for military equipment in Eastern European countries, and Germany, as the largest arms producer in Europe, naturally becomes the preferred supplier." In addition, the share of arms exports to NATO allies by Germany increased from 60% in 2022 to 76% in 2023, highlighting the strengthening of its geopolitical role. However, some members of parliament and human rights organizations have criticized the German government for relaxing arms export criteria, which may escalate regional tensions.
