China and the EU will establish a panel at the WTO to settle the electric vehicle dispute.
The WTO said in a statement that China and the EU agreed to set up a panel within the framework of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body to settle the dispute over the EU's decision to impose tariffs on imported new energy vehicles from China.
A series of major trade disputes occurred between China and the EU in 2024, which were referred to by the media as a "trade war". On October 29, 2024, the EU finally approved the imposition of additional tariffs on imported electric vehicles from China: the rate varies depending on the manufacturer, with a maximum of 35.3%.
In the statement, it was quoted from the Chinese delegation as saying: "The Chinese side believes that the EU's measures are inconsistent with the regulations of the WTO and is committed to resolving the dispute within the framework of WTO rules."
The WTO clarified that although the EU initially refused, it agreed to establish a panel after China made its second request.
