According to Japanese media reports, the school evacuation ship "Tsushima Maru" that was sunk by an American submarine during the Pacific War had the remains of five people newly posted at the Tsushima Maru Memorial on August 19.

On August 22, 1944, near the end of the Pacific War, the school evacuation ship "Tsushima Maru" was torpedoed and sank by an American submarine about 10 kilometers northwest of Akishima Island in the Tengahara Islands while en route from Okinawa to the evacuation destination of Kyushu.

It is said that at least 1,484 people died, including 784 children who were evacuated as students on board.

On August 19, three more evacuee students were added: Chiyoko Tomine (14 years old), Emiko Mashiki (6 years old), and Hiroshi Mashiki (8 years old). A total of five people, including Kikuji Matsugi (29 years old) and Hisako Matsugi (3 years old), boarded the ship during general evacuation.

Yoshikatsu Mashiki, who provided the remains, said, "We are the only ones who know this photo. When I was wondering what to do with it because I had it hanging at home, I saw that these photos were collected somewhere, and I am grateful that they let me do this, and they did it so well."

Currently, there are 417 published pictures, which account for about a quarter of the total number of victims. The Tsushima Maru Memorial calls for more images and says, "We hope to continue sending them as living evidence of many deceased."
