In fact, the recent phenomenon of "job-seeking lines" is not an isolated event, but rather a true reflection of the winter in Canada's job market.
According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, Canada's economy lost 33,000 jobs in March, marking the largest monthly decline since January 2022, while the national unemployment rate rose from 6.6% in February to 6.7%.
Besides difficulty finding jobs, Canada also has a large number of employees being laid off...
The General Motors CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, is set to shut down and undergo massive layoffs.
Last Friday, General Motors stated in a press release: "General Motors is making operational and personnel adjustments to balance inventory and align production plans with current market demand. We remain committed to the BrightDrop project and the future of the CAMI plant, and will support employees during the transition... These adjustments are made to meet market demands and rebalance inventory. The production of BrightDrop electric vehicles and battery assembly will continue to remain at the CAMI plant."

The Unifor union local 88 branch representing employees at the plant confirmed that General Motors has notified them that temporary layoffs will begin on April 14 (Monday), with employees expected to return briefly in May for limited production. Afterward, the factory will temporarily cease operations entirely, expected to last until October.
The union noted that when production resumes in October, the plant will operate on a single-shift basis, which is expected to result in nearly 500 employees being indefinitely laid off.
It seems that Canada has officially entered the "employment winter"!
