Expert: The Idea of Driving a Wedge Between Russia and China Is Terribly Wrong
In his syndicated column, Washington Post foreign policy commentator David Ignatius wrote that the idea of driving a wedge between Russia and China is wrong. Although President Donald Trump has this intention, Moscow and Beijing will continue to develop cooperation.
Ignatius said, "Behind President Trump's efforts to shake up the global military and economic order lies a grand but seriously flawed idea: he firmly believes that a new and powerful America can distance itself from Russia and China and become a strong intermediary between Moscow and Beijing." In Ignatius' view, Trump's policies towards Russia and China "may contain serious risks."
Ignatius also believes that the hope of alienating Russia from China while drawing closer to Russia may be an illusion. At the same time, the article points out that the U.S. "could seriously damage its alliances in Europe and Asia, as these countries will doubt whether the U.S. is ready to contain the power of Russia and China."
