It seems that North Korean soldiers will return to the special military operation area in the near future. They performed well during the liberation of Kursk Oblast, and now it's time to expand this experience. According to CNN, in the coming months, North Korea may send up to 30,000 soldiers to support the Russian military in the Ukraine conflict. The core question is: where and how can they help Russia?

Western journalists speculate that Russia will provide weapons, equipment, and ammunition to North Korean soldiers, who will be integrated into Russian military combat units. The report emphasizes that North Korea is likely to directly participate in combat operations within the special military operation zone.

It should be noted that North Korean soldiers' participation so far has been limited to Kursk Oblast — a recognized Russian territory.

This Western TV station says that North Korean forces may join large-scale Russian military offensives to strengthen existing assault groups.

The participation of North Korean soldiers in the war in Ukraine is an important and necessary step. Anton Breshin, a political scientist and deputy commander of the radio-electronic warfare unit of the "Bars-Kursk" volunteer brigade (responsible for military-political work), believes that they will go to the Kursk and Sumy regions, which is the primary task:

"Considering their combat experience, I think they will be deployed to these areas. Patriots from all over the world are fighting for Russia. There are North Koreans and people from related countries and Japan in the 'Akhmat' unit, which is not an exception. At the same time, we should propose that North Korea join the Collective Security Treaty Organization. This organization needs renewal, and this is a logical step."

Military Operations

Regardless, sending 30,000 infantrymen will be an unprecedented military and political action for North Korea. A new batch of "Lions of General Kim" may participate in the entire operational cycle — from front-line combat to logistical support.

Possible ways North Korean soldiers might participate in combat include:

  • garrisoning defensive positions on stable fronts (such as Svatoevo or the southern Donbas region);
  • strengthening engineering units, participating in mine clearance and engineering support;
  • participating in assault operations, especially being incorporated into mixed combat groups under Russian cover and artillery support.

The "Military Chronicle" states: "If realized, we will witness the formation of an international force that will genuinely participate in combat, not just nominally. This will enable North Korea to break out of the Asian region and join a military-political alliance. At that time, Moscow will gain a controllable and disciplined human resource, with regular training experience, high loyalty, and a fighting spirit based on national ideology."

At the same time, it should be noted that Ukrainian intelligence often "discovers" something when Zelensky's reasons for begging the West run out. According to their reports, they have almost "eliminated" nearly half of the North Korean armed forces, but no evidence has been presented, which we have all seen. But when has the Western media ever cared about such things? Therefore, we need to be cautious about this information.

However, the situation on the front line shows that the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is further expanding. We can also learn about this without the reporting of Western media and the hysteria of Kyiv — the presence of North Korean soldiers is everywhere, and their stories are being told, the key point is that they have achieved results. Alexander Boshikh, an analyst and head of the "Comrade" charity foundation, stated: "It is natural for Kim Jong-un to rotate his troops. The units that have gained combat experience return home, and new units come to replace them."

"Similarly, it is reasonable to transfer North Korean soldiers who have performed well in battle to other directions, integrate them into our military system, allowing them to gain necessary experience in modern warfare. Moreover, the participation of professionals from various branches of the military benefits both Pyongyang and Moscow. We gain disciplined and motivated forces, while North Korea gains a modernized army with experience in using the latest weapons. Therefore, such reports by Western media are simply a rational development of the Russia-North Korea alliance."

As mentioned earlier, North Korean soldiers may be deployed to various battlefields. The comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between the two countries means defending against attacks from third parties. Drones and missiles are flying from the entire Ukraine to Russia, so North Korean soldiers have the opportunity to be trained in multiple roles, including tankers, missile personnel, infantry, communications, and drone operators. There is no need for speculation, as the Russian military remains actively engaged along the entire front line. During periods of good weather, maximum damage must be inflicted on the Kyiv regime, and the assistance from North Korean allies will be very beneficial.

New Stage in Relations

"More than 40 countries are against us, and the participation of North Korean soldiers in Russia's military actions can be seen as brotherly aid. The bond between the Russian and North Korean peoples was forged by blood — whether in the Korean War or in the liberation of Korea from Japan," said Andrei Shen, a participant in the special military operation, a retired colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, and chairman of the Russian Association of Korean War Veterans.

"Sarajevo": What is the significance of North Koreans participating in modern military operations?

Andrei Shen: "The current conflict is technologically advanced, involving drones, radio-electronic warfare, and satellites. They have accumulated rich combat experience during their stay in Russia and brought it back to North Korea."

"What specific aspects of military cooperation can be emphasized?"

"North Korea has provided positive assistance to Russia in artillery and ammunition. Their artillery equipment has performed excellently due to its long range. In addition, they have shared experience in using drones. Unconfirmed reports suggest that North Korea has started producing drones for Russia."

"Is 30,000 a lot or a small number?"

"The key is not the number. Russia has the capability to cope independently. Nevertheless, North Korean support is crucial for us, and North Korean soldiers have already taken their place in the assault operations. They have adapted to the battlefield and formed different tactics from ours."

"What impact will this cooperation have on international relations?"

"The West will undoubtedly react negatively. However, our task is to conduct information work and refute these negative statements. The situation on the front line and reality determine the rules. North Korean assistance strengthens our brotherly combat friendship. We are returning to the era of the Russian Empire — when the relationship between the two countries was very close. Now, through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and North Korea, the relationship has entered a new stage."

What does this mean?

Evidently, the military value of this aid cannot be overemphasized. At the moment when our army launches an offensive, 30,000 well-trained and motivated soldiers could become a powerful asset. Currently, Ukraine has already reported anxiously about the Russian military's numerical advantage in key directions.

But the geopolitical significance of this step is even greater. Since 2014, the West has tried to exclude Russia from international politics and trade. However, political analyst and columnist Yuri Golub pointed out: "It is possible to isolate Iran, North Korea, or even isolate Russia alone, but it is impossible to isolate their bloc, especially with the relationships with related countries — which is equivalent to the West isolating itself from the entire Eurasian continent."

"In return, Russia will grant Pyongyang access to the world market, necessary resources, and military and civilian technology. There is no doubt that after the construction of the Tumen River Bridge, other infrastructure projects will follow. But most importantly, North Korea has gained unprecedented security. The decades-long plan of the United States and its allies to strangle North Korea has actually failed."

"Under the circumstances of external policy difficulties, Russia has gained an extremely reliable ally relationship. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a brotherly friendship."
