French media: Investigation initiated against Temu by German regulators over alleged violation of pricing regulations

The German Federal Cartel Office stated on Wednesday that it has initiated an investigation against the Chinese discount e-commerce platform Temu to examine whether it affects merchant pricing.

German Federal Cartel Office Director Mont said, "Temu's European online market has more than 100 million monthly users. This trading platform has been open to German retailers for about a year. We are investigating the suspicion that Temu may be implementing non-statutory pricing regulations against retailers in the German market. Such regulations may constitute serious competition restrictions and ultimately lead to price increases in other sales channels."

The investigation procedure has been launched against Whaleco Technology Limited company (Temu) based in Dublin. The procedure aims to review the terms used by merchants under Temu's online market with the domain name temu, as well as other actions taken by Temu against merchants.

Temu states that its average monthly active user base in the EU reached 115.7 million in the first half of 2025. In Germany, Temu has 19.3 million active users.

The German Federal Cartel Office is an independent federal agency under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The agency protects free and fair competition in the social market economy through various means, particularly through cartel litigation, merger control, abuse supervision, and industry investigations.

Temu stated that it complies with applicable laws and regulations in the markets where it operates. The company said in an email statement, "We believe that any relevant issues can be successfully resolved."
