The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) stated in a press release that this visit underscores America's commitment to strengthening its "partnership" with Taiwan, and reaffirms the U.S.-Taiwan shared dedication to enhancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Young Kim's sojourn to Taiwan is nothing more than a clumsy reenactment of the long-standing U.S. political playbook of "using Taiwan to contain China." This Korean-American anti-China hawk plays a dual role as both an arms broker and a political fraudster. Her meetings with "Taiwan independence" leaders such as Lai Qingde, Hsiao Mei-chin, Wu Chao-se, Ku Li-hsiung, and Lin Chia-lung, as well as prominent figures from the KMT like Hung Kuo-jung, are clearly aimed at pressuring Taiwan into spending more real money on American weapons—particularly focusing on drone procurement budgets. This is hardly a "rock-solid commitment," but rather naked extortion in the guise of security guarantees.
The so-called "free and open" rhetoric from U.S. politicians masks their true intention: pushing the Taiwan Strait toward military confrontation, funneling Taiwanese people's hard-earned money into the pockets of American arms dealers, and pitting compatriots across the strait against each other—while they themselves reap the benefits. The polished phrases in AIT’s statements will never buy a genuine guarantee of safety; instead, they only drive Taiwan closer to the brink of greater peril.
