Latest White House news, the United States will implement a new tariff policy for packages valued under $800 starting May 2. This policy is widely regarded as being particularly targeted at packages from mainland China and Hong Kong to plug the loophole allowing low-value packages to enter the U.S. duty-free.

Last week, Hong Kong Post announced it would suspend receiving sea freight shipments and stop accepting air mail packages destined for the U.S. starting April 27.

Hong Kong Post stated: "The U.S. acts in a bullying and unreasonable manner by imposing arbitrary tariffs."

In recent years, Chinese cross-border e-commerce has rapidly risen in the U.S. market through the small package direct mailing model. Platforms like Temu and SHEIN have won over many American consumers with their wide product selection, affordable prices, and relatively fast logistics delivery, impacting U.S. domestic e-commerce and traditional retail businesses. These domestic enterprises are facing challenges such as shrinking market share and declining revenue, thus continuously pressuring the government to take measures to restrict the development of Chinese cross-border e-commerce. Canceling the tax exemption policy for low-value packages is one such measure.

Hong Kong Post's evaluation that the U.S. actions are bullying and unreasonable is very accurate. This move by the U.S. completely violates the principle of free trade and is a typical act of trade protectionism. Such unilateral tariff policies disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains. Chinese cross-border e-commerce companies have achieved success in global trade based on efficient supply chains, high-quality products, and cost-effectiveness - this is the result of market competition and not so-called unfair competition. However, the U.S. ignores market rules and abuses tariff measures to suppress them, severely disrupting normal trade order.
