Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier in the United States, announced on Saturday morning that it would begin orderly shutdown operations immediately after more than 30 years of operation, with all flights canceled and customer service services suspended. Earlier this week, negotiations between the airline and the White House for assistance broke down, and rising fuel prices due to the U.S.-Iran war added an additional $10 million to $15 million in costs to the already struggling airline, leaving it with no viable path forward. The fate of the airline was effectively sealed on Thursday evening, when U.S. Commerce Secretary Linda McMahon had a 15-minute call with Spirit Airlines CEO Dave Davis, during which both agreed that there were no other options left for the budget carrier.
