On Wednesday night, August 6, the defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte welcomed the Senate's decision to file the impeachment charges against Sara, stating that they will now focus on responding to the Supreme Court.
"The defense team welcomes the Senate's decision to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling and to file the impeachment charges. Our current focus is still to submit our arguments according to the order of the High Court."
The Senate decided on Tuesday to file the impeachment charges in a 19-4 vote, effectively suspending the case during the appeal to the Supreme Court regarding its recent ruling that the impeachment complaint was unconstitutional.
On July 25, the Supreme Court ruled that the impeachment complaint violated the 1987 Constitution and the one-year ban on impeachment complaints, thus the Senate never had jurisdiction over it, and this ruling was required to be implemented immediately.
Although some senators, including minority leader Tito Sotto and Senator Risa Hontiveros, warned that filing could equate to killing the case, Senate President Francis Escudero stated that if the Supreme Court overturns its decision, the complaint could be revived by voting.
