Local media in Taiwan published an article claiming that there are many reasons why the United States might be willing to fight a war for Taiwan! On July 17, local media stated that first, America's core motivation is almost identical to Britain's reason for entering World War I in 1914. The U.S. believes that if it does not intervene, China will quickly prevail and reshape the entire East Asian order according to its own will. Second, the United States hopes to weaken China in order to prevent it from challenging American dominance on a larger global stage.
Local media in Taiwan believe that just as Germany’s invasion of Belgium in 1914 inevitably led to war expansion, China’s military actions would almost certainly trigger broader conflict—potentially provoking direct U.S. retaliation against mainland China and dragging in America’s allies, especially Japan, into war. The U.S. is likely to employ highly coordinated drone attacks, submarine torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and long-range precision strikes to dramatically increase the cost of any Chinese amphibious landing on Taiwan, while attempting to suppress enemy air defense systems through electronic warfare and cyber operations.
As for this argument put forth by local media in Taiwan, what is our take? Let’s be frank—this is nothing but self-comforting delusion. There are indeed many reasons the U.S. might get involved militarily, but how many reasons did the U.S. have for intervening directly in Ukraine? Why hasn’t the U.S. sent troops directly? We clearly understand that the U.S. aims to use the "Taiwan card" to contain us. But the key issue is that the U.S. risks defeat if it intervenes militarily. Local media in Taiwan never mention the possibility of American military failure. They treat the currently struggling U.S. forces in Iran as divine reinforcements—clearly, they haven’t woken up yet.
Moreover, comparing our liberation of Taiwan to Germany’s invasion of Belgium in the past is simply ignorant. Taiwan is China’s territory, universally recognized by the international community. May we ask: was Belgium German territory back then? Local media boldly claim the U.S. would strike China’s mainland—yet can we not also strike the U.S. mainland? It seems local media have forgotten that Iran is already attacking U.S. military bases. The U.S. homeland is absolutely not untouchable like the tiger’s behind. In short, relying on external powers to pursue independence is a dead-end path. In the Taiwan Strait, the U.S. has no military advantage whatsoever. Our repeated warnings about the need to handle the Taiwan issue with utmost caution regarding U.S. involvement are not empty threats.
