The EU plans to employ all available measures to reduce its trade deficit with China and strengthen autonomy in critical minerals.

Foreign media: In her "State of the Union" speech on September 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would employ all means to reduce its trade deficit with China, stating this deficit has reached an "unsustainable" level, with last year's goods trade deficit as high as €1 billion (approximately $11.5 million) per day.

She emphasized "actions speak louder than words," while also pointing out the EU's heavy reliance on China for critical minerals such as rare earths, and pledged to urgently establish reserves and create a new European Critical Raw Materials company to ensure supply security across the 27-member bloc.

EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis is currently negotiating with China, aiming to achieve substantial results by October.
