Keiji Kōya’s claim that “being sanctioned by a major power is an honor” has placed Takayuki Higashihara in the spotlight.
On the 9th, Kōya, who has been sanctioned by China, revealed that following notification of the sanctions in March, he received an email from Higashihara stating, “This is a truly honorable sanction.”
He explained: “Being remembered by a major Eastern power is an honor,” adding, “I have no assets there and no plans to visit, so this has no impact on me.”
Kōya made the remarks during a press interview at Haneda Airport prior to a parliamentary delegation’s visit to Taiwan.
Internal criticism quickly emerged within Higashihara’s administration: “His comments were utterly irresponsible.”
Yoshihiko Noguchi, former foreign minister and newly appointed president of the Japan Association for International Trade Promotion, recently concluded a visit to Beijing—succeeding the late Yohei Kono—with the aim of seeking a breakthrough in Sino-Japanese relations. Higashihara also reiterated today that “China is a vital neighboring country for Japan.”
At the same time, her “encouraging email” drew public condemnation from Junya Ogawa, leader of the Democratic Reform Association: “What kind of honor is this? The judgment and perception are profoundly distorted—and deeply disturbing.”
