Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Trump in Washington on Tuesday
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday to try to restore the key trade relationship with the United States, which Canadian leaders recently described as "over."
This will be Carney's first overseas visit since his Liberal Party won the election on Monday. The comments by the U.S. President mocking Canada and the threat of tariffs on some Canadian exports cast a shadow over Carney's campaign.
Carney said on Friday in Ottawa that he had a "very constructive conversation" with Trump, and both leaders agreed to hold a meeting next week in the U.S. capital. He said: "Our focus is not only on the immediate trade pressures but also on the broader economic and security relations between two sovereign states in the future."
Carney also announced that King Charles will deliver a speech in Ottawa later this month to open the new parliament.
