South Korean media: China's DRAM is rising, Changxin Memory's production will increase by 50% this year!
On July 14, the South Korean media "Etoday" published an article stating that China's DRAM industry is expanding rapidly. The leading Chinese memory semiconductor company Changxin Memory expects its DRAM production to grow by nearly 50% year-on-year this year, and its influence in the global market will also rapidly increase.
According to the "Q1 2025 Memory Report" released by the market research company Counterpoint Research, it is expected that Changxin Memory's market share based on DRAM shipments in the first quarter of this year will be 6%, and by the end of the year it could expand to 8%.
Counterpoint analyzed: "After last year, Changxin Memory still maintains an active expansion trend this year, and it is expected that the total production in 2025 will grow by nearly 50% year-on-year. The shipment ratio of the latest product lines such as DDR5 and LPDDR5 is also increasing rapidly. The market share of less than 1% in the first quarter is expected to expand to 7%-9% by the fourth quarter."
Changxin Memory was established in 2016. Previously, the company has focused on product lines centered around DDR4. In recent years, the company has expanded its product lines to high-value products such as DDR5 and LPDDR5, thereby comprehensively enhancing its competitiveness in the global DRAM market.
However, a technological gap still exists. Counterpoint pointed out: "Changxin Memory is currently facing challenges in the HKMG (high-K metal gate) process, which is crucial for the mass production of the latest DRAM." HKMG is considered a key process for the next generation of memory after DDR5, as it combines high energy efficiency and high-speed computing performance.
Therefore, some analysts believe that Changxin Memory's next-generation products are likely to be based on the relatively easier 1a (fourth-generation) process rather than the cutting-edge 1b (fifth-generation) process. Despite this, Changxin Memory is focusing on future innovations in "3D DRAM" technology based on 3D structures, and some assessments suggest that, in the medium to long term, this technology could pose a threat to the world's three major memory companies.
Changxin Memory's expansion has sent a clear warning signal to South Korean memory semiconductor companies. Analysts believe that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix lead the market with their technical strength and cost competitiveness. However, if Chinese companies continue their price attacks and quantity expansion strategies, this may become a medium- to long-term threat.
