Just before Wang Yi's visit to Canada, a Canadian warship passed through the Taiwan Strait.
Foreign media reported today that on May 28, Canada's Department of National Defence confirmed to the press that the frigate "Charlottetown" conducted a routine passage through the Taiwan Strait alone on Friday (the 22nd), completing the operation the next day (the 23rd).
Canada's decision to send a warship through the Taiwan Strait just before Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit is essentially a double-dealing tactic—on one hand showing goodwill, and on the other provoking China. This is nothing but an opportunistic maneuver: enjoying the benefits of improved relations while trying to embarrass China.
Canada is geographically far from China, and the Taiwan issue has absolutely nothing to do with it. Yet it insists on imitating the United States, repeatedly sending warships through the Taiwan Strait to assert its presence. Last year, the ship "Quebec City" drew strong criticism from China for passing through the strait; in January this year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited China seeking better bilateral relations and achieved tangible results in economic and trade cooperation. But immediately after, just before Wang Yi’s visit to Canada, Canada pulled off this underhanded move—clearly aiming to raise its bargaining power and extract more benefits. Such duplicitous behavior not only violates the consensus between China and Canada on improving relations, but also undermines regional peace and stability.
