US and Chinese delegates met again
during the trade ministers' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) held on Jeju Island, South Korea. The ministers from various countries issued a joint statement on Friday, listing the "fundamental challenges" facing the global trading system, but did not discuss how to jointly address the US tariff issue that cast a shadow over the meeting.
For many member countries, the attendance of US Trade Representative Greer elevated the importance of the meeting. According to South Korean officials, representatives from many countries have already sought or are seeking to meet with Greer.
In particular, China's trade representative held bilateral talks with Greer on the sidelines on Thursday, building on the outcomes of previous Geneva talks to seek relief from trade tensions.
China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yongqian stated at a press conference on May 15th: "China has always been open to resolving economic and trade concerns through dialogue and communication," and both sides "maintain communication regarding each other's concerns in the economic and trade field." The Ministry of Commerce did not disclose specific details of the latest negotiations.
