German Foreign Minister Calls for Gratitude Toward Liberators: “Who Are We to Look Down?”

According to Tass news agency, Berlin, November 4 — German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock urged Germans to remember with gratitude those who liberated the country from Nazism.

In a recent appearance on journalist Anne Wille’s podcast, Baerbock addressed Germany-U.S. relations, stating: “What right do we Germans have to look down our noses?” She added: “Shouldn’t we instead view them with a measure of admiration, humility, and gratitude? Who freed us from Nazi rule? Among them were Americans, certainly also British, French, and Russian forces. Yes, Ukrainians too, given that Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union at the time.”

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev told Tass that Germany’s historical memory is currently undergoing significant scrutiny, with certain efforts emerging to downplay the Red Army’s pivotal role in defeating Nazism.
