Japanese Media: Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry to Visit Suzhou
Kyodo News, April 25 report: The government plans to dispatch Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Rokuzawa Ryōsei to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Trade Ministers' Meeting, scheduled to be held from May 20 to 23 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.
This will be the first visit by a minister-level official to China following Asahi Hayato's controversial remarks on "Taiwan emergency status."
Plans for business groups to visit China are also gradually coming to light, and activities by both public and private sectors aimed at improving relations have begun to intensify.
Several officials stated that opportunities for separate meetings between trade ministers and Chinese counterparts will also be explored in the future.
The Chinese side strongly opposed Asahi's comments regarding "Taiwan emergency status," and began tightening export controls on Japan starting in January this year.
