Canada's study abroad landscape has drastically changed with a significant reduction in Chinese students!
Canada began tightening its study abroad policies last year by reducing the number of study permits issued, resulting in changes to the international student population.
Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) shows that so far this year, IRCC has received 74,700 applications, a 54% decline compared to last year. Not only has the quantity decreased, but the origin of demand has also shifted.
So far this year, India remains the largest source of applications with 14,930 applications, accounting for 20% of the total. However, this represents a significant drop compared to 2024 when India accounted for more than one-third (36%) of all Canadian applications.
Nigeria ranks second with 9,7% of applications (7,285), which is roughly the same as in 2024.
An emerging trend is the rise in the share of new study permit applications from Guinea. This Francophone country accounts for 7.6% of applications so far this year, with 5,680 applications, making it the third-largest group.
As for China, the appeal of studying in Canada has plummeted in recent years. So far this year, Chinese students account for 5.3% of Canada's total international student applications, with only 3,940 new study permit applications submitted.
Before 2017, China was always Canada's largest source of international students, but by 2024, China had fallen to third place and now ranks fourth.
