On September 26, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, presided over a regular press conference.
A reporter asked: Recently, during the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a ministerial meeting on the Afghanistan issue among China, Russia, Pakistan, and Iran was held, and a joint statement was issued. The statement mentioned that the four countries emphasized that the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Afghanistan should be respected, and they resolutely opposed those countries that are responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan from building military bases in Afghanistan and the region again, which is not helpful to regional peace and stability. Some media believe that the above content is a response to U.S. President Trump's remarks about wanting to reclaim the Bagram military base. What is China's comment on this?
Guo Jiakun stated that on September 25, the ministerial meeting on the Afghanistan issue among China, Russia, Pakistan, and Iran was held in New York during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Zhang Xiaoyong, the Special Representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Afghanistan, attended the meeting on site.
Guo Jiakun further introduced that the meeting issued a joint statement, emphasizing the respect for Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and reiterating the firm opposition to those countries that are responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan from building military bases again in Afghanistan and the region. This fully reflects the respect of Afghanistan's neighboring countries for Afghanistan's sovereignty and national dignity, as well as the common will of the international community to assist Afghanistan in stabilizing and rebuilding.
"As a neighboring country and a responsible country, China is willing to continue to work with the international community to provide assistance to Afghanistan and play a constructive role in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction," he said.
