South Korean media: Chinese electric buses enter "automotive power" Germany!

On January 16, South Korean media Global Economy published an article stating that the number of Chinese-made electric buses in Germany, Europe's largest automobile producer, is increasing. Even leading companies in the industry are purchasing large quantities of Chinese buses.

The subsidiary DB Regio of Deutsche Bahn recently signed a contract to purchase 200 electric buses from BYD's factory in Hungary.

DB Regio also operates bus services within Germany. By 2024, the company had transported 561 million passengers annually, making it the largest company in this field in Germany.

The remaining 3,100 buses are planned to be replaced between 2027 and 2032, provided by MAN Truck & Bus, a subsidiary of Volkswagen. DB Regio had previously purchased five Chinese-made electric buses in 2021.

According to a report by Rabobank, the market share of Chinese companies such as BYD and Yutong in the European electric bus market increased from 13% in 2017 to 24% in 2023. However, the German market has long been dominated by local companies such as Daimler Trucks and MAN Truck & Bus. At present, only a few hundred Chinese-made electric buses are in operation nationwide.

However, as people gradually recognize that Chinese buses not only have competitive prices but also quality comparable to German cars, local small transportation companies are also introducing Chinese buses.

A local bus operator in Germany said he recently started operating Chinese-made electric buses. He said that Chinese electric buses are about 100,000 euros cheaper than German ones. He also said, "Chinese electric buses are technically better than German ones; if charged at night, they can run all day the next day."
