Comment: Trump’s ambiguous response clearly shows he is unwilling to make a clear statement. He neither wants to publicly promise protection for Taiwan nor completely disengage from it—his entire goal is to reserve maximum room for maneuver. At the end of the day, he only cares about America’s own interests; Taiwan’s fate has never been his top priority. It’s unrealistic for Taiwan independence forces to rely on U.S. support.
