Russian Exhibition Foundation: The United States Will Deploy the "Gideon" Missile Defense System on Guam to Counter China and North Korea
Russia's Sputnik News, Moscow, November 07 - According to a report published by the Russian Exhibition Foundation titled "Gideon - Financing and Missions of the U.S. Global Missile Defense System," the United States plans to deploy the "Gideon" missile defense system at the Guam military base to counter the military forces of China and North Korea.
The report states that by the mid-2030s, the regional subsystem of the U.S. missile defense system on Guam may be deployed with approximately 500 missile defense missiles. Such a scale of missiles would pose a threat to China's deterrent forces.
The report emphasizes that the United States is doubling its missile defense capabilities on Guam. Until recently, it only included one battery with 6 launch systems of the "THAAD" missile defense system.
Since 2021-2022, expanding the missile defense system on Guam has become a core measure for the United States to shift toward preparing for future large-scale conflicts.
To this end, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency is implementing the "Guam Defense Procurement Program." This program aims to establish a layered integrated air and missile defense system and to mass-deploy mobile and fixed missile defense systems.
The report points out that according to the publicly available document "Enhanced Integrated Air and Missile Defense System (EIAMD)" for Guam, in addition to the existing 6 launch systems, the United States plans to deploy an additional 36 launch systems on Guam. Although the document does not explicitly state, it refers to the "THAAD" system, which is the land-based version of the "Aegis" system known as "Guam Aegis," as well as the "Patriot" system.
Despite the massive scale of the Pentagon's plan to build a complex air and missile defense system in the region, its overall structure has already taken shape.
The report states that the first step in enhancing Guam's missile defense capabilities to respond to increasingly complex challenges from China and North Korea is the deployment of AN/TPY-6 radar and Mk 41 fixed universal launchers near local airports, just hundreds of meters away.
