Al Jazeera's official website, local time April 3: According to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, Iran claims it shot down a US A-10 aircraft near the Strait of Hormuz (see Figure 3).

The report states that, citing Iranian military public relations officials, the aircraft was downed south of and in the surrounding waters of this strategic waterway. This claim cannot currently be independently verified.

The report notes that the A-10 is a US ground attack aircraft specifically designed for close air support missions, particularly against armored vehicles and ground forces. Previously, a US Air Force fighter jet crashed in the Gulf region on Friday.
