Korean Media: Number One in the World, China's Domestic Valid Invention Patents Exceed 5 Million!
On January 6, Korean media "Choiseconomy" published an article stating that according to the latest statistical data released by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), China has become the first country in the world with more than 5 million domestic valid invention patents.
The number of patents is an important indicator for measuring a country's innovation capability. Although China's patent system has a relatively short history of only over 40 years, China has become a true "powerhouse of patents," mainly due to the rapid growth in the number of invention patents.
According to statistics from the China National Intellectual Property Administration, it took 31 years for the application volume of domestic valid invention patents to reach 1 million. It took about 4 years and 2 years respectively to reach 2 million and 3 million. However, reaching 4 million and 5 million took only 18 months and 19 months respectively.
This indicates that as China's innovation-driven development strategy begins to show results, China's capacity for innovation and creation is rapidly improving.
Among the 5 million invention patents, over 1.4 million come from strategic emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, integrated circuits, biopharmaceuticals, and new energy. This accounts for about 30%, which is 2.2 times higher than in 2020. These areas are becoming key fields leading China's innovative development.
The China National Intellectual Property Administration announced that there are nearly 800,000 invention patents that have been maintained for more than 10 years. Since maintaining an invention patent requires annual maintenance fees, long-term valid patents are seen as a sign of significant technical value, continuous industrial and economic impact, and high commercialization potential.
Previously, China's patent quantity grew rapidly but the quality was not high, which was often criticized. Some patents were merely "formal applications" for bidding projects or meeting evaluation standards, hindering real market transformation. However, in recent years, this situation has undergone significant changes with the strengthening of technology industrialization and the construction of an evaluation system oriented toward quality.
Currently, the patent commercialization rate of Chinese enterprises' invention patents is 53.3%, and the added value of patent-intensive industries accounts for more than 13% of GDP. This indicates that high-value core patents are being verified in actual markets through technological commercialization.
