Chinese-funded hydropower plant in Chile under attack, gunmen enter to damage equipment

Reported by Agence France-Presse from Santiago on the 20th, several gunmen entered a Chinese-funded hydropower plant currently under construction in Chile today and set fire to dozens of trucks and heavy machinery.

According to AFP's report, the Rucalhue Power Plant is expected to cost around $350 million to build, and will be constructed by "Rucalhue Energy SpA", a subsidiary of "China International Water and Electric Corporation" (CWE).

The power plant is located along one of Chile's main rivers, the Biobio River.

Local police chief Miccono pointed out that after the gunmen entered, they threatened the factory security guards and then burned all the equipment inside the factory.

The power plant is located about 550 kilometers south of Santiago. The police chief said that the gunmen burned 45 trucks and 5 pieces of heavy machinery, causing injuries to 2 security guards.

Chilean Security Minister Codero told local media that based on the location and method of the incident, it can be speculated that this event has the nature of a "terrorist attack".

Rucalhue Energy Company stated that they are still assessing the cost of the losses.
