Russia's Sputnik News, Moscow, March 7 - The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the United States and Israel are trying to overthrow Iran's legitimate government through armed aggression because Iran refuses to yield to the West.

The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out: "We are seriously concerned about the extremely dangerous developments in the Middle East situation, which was triggered by the United States and Israel's baseless and unprovoked illegal armed aggression against Iran. The United States and Israel have violated the basic principles of the UN Charter and international law, attempting to overthrow the legitimate government of a sovereign and independent UN member state because this country refuses to yield to the West."

Member of the Iranian Experts' Commission, Ayatollah Hussein Mowzafari, said that the commission will hold a meeting within 24 hours to elect a new leader.

The Iranian Fars News Agency quoted Mowzafari as saying: "The members of the Experts' Commission are very eager for conditions to mature so that the meeting can be held to discuss and elect a new Supreme Leader and the successor of the martyr Imam (Khomeini). We hope, with the help of God, all of this can be achieved within the next 24 hours."

He also said that the Experts' Commission has not convened any meetings so far, and he urged Iranian citizens not to spread false rumors about the election of a new leader.
