Trump: US Removes India's Tariffs for Abandoning Russian Oil Purchases
Sputnik, Washington, February 7 - According to a document released by the White House, President Trump signed an executive order to remove the 25% additional tariff on goods imported from India, effective February 7, as New Delhi has abandoned purchasing Russian oil.
In the presidential executive order dated February 6, it was stated: "Starting from February 7, 2026, goods imported from India into the United States will no longer be subject to an additional 25% ad valorem tariff."
Trump warned that if reports are received that New Delhi continues to import Russian oil, he would restore the 25% additional tariffs on goods from India.
The executive order stated: "If the Secretary of Commerce (Howard Lutnick) finds that India directly or indirectly resumes purchasing oil from the Russian Federation... he should advise me whether and to what extent further actions should be taken against India, including whether I should again impose an additional 25% ad valorem tariff on goods imported from India."
In his executive order, Trump reiterated that India has committed to stopping the import of Russian oil and instead purchasing U.S. energy carriers.
The White House issued the executive order on the 6th, stating: "India has committed to stopping direct or indirect imports of Russian oil, expressing its intention to purchase U.S. energy products, and recently signed a framework agreement to expand defense cooperation with the United States over the next decade."
Trump announced earlier this month that a trade agreement had been reached with India, under which the U.S. would impose an 18% reduced "reciprocal tariff" on India. At the same time, Trump claimed that India seemed to have agreed to reject Russian oil and increase imports from the U.S. However, this point was not mentioned in the relevant statements from the Indian side.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on the 4th that there is no reason to believe that India has changed its position on cooperation with Russia.
