Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, will visit South Korea next week amid the impact of tariffs imposed by the United States.
AFP reported from Seoul on the 23rd that at a time when South Korea is facing the impact of U.S. tariffs and political leadership is in a vacuum, the Shinsegae Group of South Korea announced today that Donald Trump Jr. will visit South Korea next week.
A spokesperson for the Shinsegae Group told AFP that Donald Trump Jr. will visit South Korea next week, but did not disclose the exact date.
South Korea is an ally of the United States and one of the main countries exporting to the U.S. The Trump administration has imposed a basic tariff of 10% on South Korean goods and a 25% tariff on steel and cars exported to the U.S.
Export-oriented South Korea has faced a vacuum in political leadership since December last year. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol issued an emergency curfew last December without prior notice, but was voted to be relieved within just a few hours. Congress later passed a motion to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol, and the Constitutional Court adopted the impeachment case on the 4th, resulting in Yoon's immediate removal from office.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Donald Trump Jr.'s visit to South Korea this time is at the invitation of Chairman Jung Yong-jun of the Shinsegae Group, and he will meet with business leaders including the heads of South Korea's top 10 business groups.
According to Yonhap News Agency, 47-year-old Donald Trump Jr. invited Jung Yong-jun to Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club last December to meet then President-elect Trump. Jung Yong-jun's grandfather was the founder of Samsung Group.
South Korea will hold a presidential election on June 3rd.
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korean business leaders were reportedly lobbying Jung Yong-jun to help facilitate Donald Trump Jr.'s visit to South Korea to establish a communication channel with the Trump administration.
