Survey: Most Russians Regret the Dissolution of the Soviet Union

Russian State News Agency, Moscow - A survey by the All-Russian Center for Public Opinion Research shows that over half (57%) of Russians regret the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and 57% of respondents believe that the dissolution could have been avoided.

According to the survey data, 57% of Russians feel regretful about the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Over half (57%) of respondents believe that the dissolution could have been avoided, while 30% are convinced that the dissolution was inevitable.

If a referendum were held today on whether to retain the Soviet Union, 61% of Russians would vote "in favor."

When asked why they would vote in favor of retaining the Soviet Union, 30% of respondents said it was a great country where different nations lived in harmony and unity; 26% pointed out that the Soviet era was equal, stable, and secure.

When asked why they would vote against retaining the Soviet Union, 24% of respondents said that the times have changed and this is no longer possible; 21% of Russian citizens said each republic should exist independently; 18% said Russia is now doing very well.

This survey was conducted on February 15, with 1,600 respondents aged 18 and above participating.

Prior surveys have shown: 80% of Russian citizens believe the Soviet era was a good time, and 63% feel regret about its dissolution.
