The front page of The Arizona Republic, Americans truly recognized the power of the dust storm.
On August 25, 2025, a strong dust storm swept across Arizona, USA, known as the "Habu Dust Storm," caused by strong downdrafts from thunderstorms, forming a towering "dust wall" that led to traffic paralysis, airport closures, numerous flight delays, and power outages in Phoenix and surrounding areas.
The roof of Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was blown off, causing rainwater to flood the terminal, resulting in hundreds of flights being delayed or canceled. More than 60,000 households in Arizona lost power, and electricity was basically restored within a few hours.
The dust storm lasted about 15 minutes, visibility dropped to zero, making driving difficult, and some road sections formed "dust walls."
The Habu Dust Storm is formed by strong downdrafts (speed 80-145 km/h) from thunderstorms that lift up dust, creating a moving dust wall, which is more destructive compared to ordinary dust storms. Such phenomena are common in arid regions and are usually accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain.
There have been multiple large-scale dust storm events in American history, such as the 1934 American Black Storm event, which caused severe ecological disasters, related to excessive land development at the time.
