Renewable energy generation exceeds coal for the first time, Guterres urges countries to accelerate energy transition
Kazakhstan International News Agency - According to a report from the United Nations News Office, the latest analysis by the global think tank "Ember," which is committed to accelerating the global clean energy transition, shows that renewable energy generation has exceeded that of coal. In response, UN Secretary-General Guterres has called on countries again to move away from fossil fuels that cause global warming.
The two reports released on Tuesday confirmed that the global "renewable energy revolution" is accelerating at an unprecedented pace.
The International Energy Agency noted in another report that the capacity of renewable energy continues to expand and is expected to double by 2030.
Accelerating energy transition
The report published by the global think tank "Ember" states that in the first half of this year, the growth of solar and wind power exceeded the increase in global electricity demand, resulting in a slight decline in coal and natural gas power generation compared to the same period in 2024.
Vyatros-Motika, a senior power analyst at "Ember," pointed out that this trend marks the arrival of a "key turning point."
She said, "The growth rate of solar and wind power is now sufficient to meet the increasing global electricity demand, marking a new phase where clean energy and demand grow in sync."
Solar power leads the growth
The International Energy Agency's report states that by 2030, the global renewable energy capacity is expected to increase by 460 gigawatts, equivalent to the total power generation of China, the EU, and Japan combined.
Solar photovoltaic technology is leading this growth trend, expanding rapidly by converting sunlight into electricity, and is expected to contribute about 80% of the new capacity, followed by wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal energy.
Creating a better future for all
Secretary-General Guterres posted on social media: "The future of clean energy is no longer a distant promise - it has arrived."
He called on the international community to "seize this historic opportunity and accelerate the global move toward a better future."
The two reports released on Tuesday confirm the conclusions of his report "A Moment of Opportunity" released in July, and echo the calls made by world leaders at the climate summit last month. The summit, as a prelude to the 30th UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Brazil in November, was held during the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly.
Guterres continues to emphasize that, despite progress, the speed and fairness of the energy transition are still insufficient.
He pointed out that to achieve the goals set by the Paris Agreement - limiting global temperature rise to within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels - the international community must make greater efforts.
