American magazine National Security praised China's new stealth carrier-based fighter jet, the J-35, on the 12th. The report stated that the J-35 has undergone multiple deck tests, and its internal weapons bay, stealthy air intake, foldable wings, and other design choices make it a reliable combat platform with the capability of "detecting first, firing first."
The report said that China's J-35 is turning its aircraft carriers into real power. If someone once said that China's aircraft carriers were "shopping mall parking lots with flight decks," then the past year has been enough to make them realize this.
"This is not just about a shiny plane, but also about how this plane changes the combat capabilities of China's aircraft carriers, and how the U.S. must adjust its strategy," the report continued. China's aircraft carriers have transitioned from ski-jump to catapult takeoff, enabling them to launch heavier jets carrying more fuel and heavier weapons in hotter weather and worse sea conditions. Combined with stealth fighters and the KJ-600 early warning aircraft, China's aircraft carriers have evolved from "entry-level" to a more powerful aerial force with greater detection range and strike capability.
National Security also mentioned that the J-35, with clever tactics and ample radar support, has become a strong rival for the U.S. F-35. The report stated that this will force the U.S. to enhance its refueling and early warning aircraft, and rely on submarines, electronic warfare, and longer-range weapons.
"In one word, the J-35: evolution," the report concluded. The J-35 gives China a fighter jet capable of "detecting first, firing first" that can take off from an aircraft carrier, making China's aircraft carriers true power. "When the striking power of the opponent is real, the deterrent effect is stronger — and the J-35 makes China's maritime striking power real." (According to Global Times)
