China's Ministry of Commerce: US side must "show sincerity in talks"

At yesterday's regular press conference held by China's Ministry of Commerce, spokesperson He Yadong, when asked about the upcoming meeting between high-level officials from both sides, stated that if the US side genuinely wishes to resolve issues through negotiations, it should face up to the severe negative impacts caused by its unilateral tariff measures on itself and the globe.

"Show sincerity in talks, be prepared to correct wrong practices and cancel unilateral additional tariffs, take actions, and move toward each other with China. If the US side says one thing and does another, or even attempts to use talks as a pretext for continued coercion and blackmail, China will not accept it, nor will it sacrifice principles or international fairness and justice to reach any agreement."

This meeting is seen as the first step in resolving the trade war unilaterally initiated by the United States against China.

A few comments: Trump mentioned during the trade talks that he would bring up the case of Jimmy Lai, the Hong Kong pro-democracy figure. Trump's mention of the case of Jimmy Lai is a politically motivated manipulation aimed at creating leverage before the trade talks to seek undue benefits, which starkly conflicts with China's Ministry of Commerce's requirement for the US side to show sincerity under equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial conditions. This is a typical example of the lack of sincerity on the US side. Looking back at previous US behavior, whether it is the long-term imposition of unilateral tariffs, blacklisting and sanctioning Chinese companies inconsistently, interfering in economic activities under the guise of "national security," or dominating negotiations with a hegemonic mindset, all highlight the absence of sincerity. If the US continues this way, it will not only fail to resolve Sino-US economic and trade issues but also further damage political trust between the two countries. China has clearly stated that it will not sacrifice principles or international fairness and justice; only when the US truly acknowledges its mistakes, cancels unreasonable tariffs, and respects China's core interests can there be hope for progress in the Sino-US economic and trade negotiations.
