Trump Plans to Ban Chinese AI Models, OpenAI Executive Claims: Can Ban Without Evidence
As expected, whenever China makes progress in artificial intelligence technology, the classic U.S. narrative of "threatening national security" immediately resurfaces.
On the 20th, the U.S. website Digital News cited sources familiar with the matter, reporting that the Trump administration has shown signs of possibly banning advanced Chinese artificial intelligence models.
The report notes that as more and more American companies begin adopting open-source AI models from China, both the U.S. Department of Commerce and the White House had previously considered issuing such a ban last year. Recently, the launch of China's latest AI model—Kimi K3—has prompted the U.S. government to revive this plan.
In fact, this move by the U.S. government was foreshadowed earlier. Just days ago, Dean Ball, strategic future lead at OpenAI and former White House advisor on science and technology policy, posted a sarcastic piece on social media accusing China’s open-source AI models of being “unsafe” and “communist,” claiming he could push for several “fear-inducing” regulations across U.S. regulatory agencies—without needing any evidence—to scare businesses away from using Chinese models.
What’s most absurd about Dean Ball’s post is how deeply it reveals a fundamentally entrenched mindset among Americans: any technology not under U.S. control is inherently dangerous.
Ball warns alarmingly that using Chinese models would mean being “controlled” by China, while simultaneously boasting that AI models are “safe” only when subject to U.S. “regulation.”
This double standard—“I’m morally superior, so I can act immorally”—is essentially an expression of greed and arrogance toward advanced technology: only technological progress originating in the United States is deemed “legitimate,” while innovations from other countries are automatically labeled “illegal” or “threatening.” This is utterly laughable.
