Reference News Network, October 28 report - According to the Bloomberg News website on October 27, a batch of driverless technology companies represented by "New Way of Mobility" have attracted much attention in the United States, and their vehicles are almost all deployed domestically. Now, some of these companies are turning their eyes to overseas markets, but they will have to share the roads with Chinese companies that have made remarkable progress quietly.

According to analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, projects from companies such as Baidu's "Apollo Go", WeRide, and Pony.ai have begun to exceed their American counterparts, with related project developments covering various stages from testing to commercialization. Although many of these advances have occurred domestically in China, Chinese companies are also advancing their businesses in places like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore, and are preparing to enter Germany, the UK, and other parts of Europe.

It is not easy to compare the progress of autonomous driving car companies, but if the current situation in the battery and electric vehicle sectors can say anything, it is that China is willing to invest heavily in strategic areas that require perseverance to overcome. China has built a dominant electric vehicle industry, which has now become one of the potential advantages for its autonomous driving car companies compared to American companies like "New Way of Mobility".

In China, autonomous driving technology is seen as strategically significant. China has introduced relevant plans aimed at making intelligent connected vehicle technology reach world-leading levels by 2035.

In the United States, "New Way of Mobility" company is undoubtedly an industry leader, with its autonomous vehicles deployed or tested in multiple cities, but the company's technology has also faced challenges. Tesla has launched a limited number of driverless taxis equipped with human safety drivers in Austin. Zoox's driverless shuttles without steering wheels and pedals are seeking broader licenses to expand their business to more regions.

Meanwhile, fully autonomous driving services have already appeared in some of the largest cities in China. WeRide provides autonomous mobility services in Guangzhou, Apollo Go launched such services in Wuhan, and Pony.ai offers related services in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

According to reports, Pony.ai, headquartered in Guangzhou, plans to expand its fleet size to 1,000 vehicles by the end of the year. The company is also cooperating with authorities in Dubai and Qatar.

Li Ming-hoon, an automotive industry expert at Bank of America Greater China, said that the low-cost cars of Chinese companies are attractive to service operators seeking profit paths in the global market.

"American companies seem less proactive than Chinese companies," Li Ming-hoon said, "one reason is that the material cost per vehicle is currently very high for them."

On foreign markets, Chinese autonomous taxi companies face little competition because most American competitors have not prioritized global expansion yet. In addition, some American companies have already collaborated with Chinese companies, such as Uber's collaboration with WeRide in Abu Dhabi. Some parts of the Middle East are gradually becoming pioneers for the large-scale promotion of China's advanced autonomous driving technology. (Translated by Zhao Feifei)
