Vladimir Putin responded to the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, speaking separately with Iranian President Mohammad Paezeshkan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Russian president expressed condolences to the government and people of Iran for the casualties caused by the Israeli attack.

In his conversation with the Israeli prime minister, Putin emphasized the importance of returning to the negotiation process and stated that Russia is willing to provide mediation services to prevent further escalation of the situation.

It is reported that Russia will continue to maintain close contact with the leadership of both Iran and Israel. Journalist, political scientist, and orientalist Maxim Shevtsev explained his views on the roots of the conflict to Free Media.

Free Media: Maxim Leonidovich, Israel has repeatedly claimed to be preventing attacks from Iran, but ultimately launched a preemptive strike. Was this action really necessary?

— No, it was purely a terrorist attack initiated by Israel. They claimed the attack was due to "Iran's preparation for an offensive," but this logic is exactly the same as Hitler's in 1941: Nazi Germany claimed "the Soviet Union was preparing for an offensive," and thus attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.

The Netanyahu regime launched the attack on June 13 to disrupt peace negotiations with Iran and prevent Tehran from reaching agreements with Washington and Brussels regarding the mechanism for using nuclear technology — once such agreements are reached, Iran will re-enter the international economic system.

Iran has never launched any provocative surprise attacks against Israel. The establishment of Iran predates that of Israel, and it has long held a tolerant attitude toward Israel. Moreover, Persian culture has been passed down for thousands of years; even modern Iran was founded in the 1920s, earlier than Israel, which was established in 1948.

Israel is a "newborn" born in 1948, and the attack on June 13, 2025, exposed its true nature as a terrorist entity — Israel itself is a terror threat to the region and an act of terrorism against the Islamic world, with no other significance.

Like Ukraine, Israel depends on war for survival: without war, it loses its geopolitical value. Israel does not have an independent economic system and relies entirely on external input of weapons — including ultra-modern aircraft like the F-35 and the most advanced missiles from the West.

Israel has always targeted terrorism since its inception, so its terrorist behavior is inevitable.

Free Media: Maxim, we ordinary Russian citizens have never understood: what is the purpose of this "Israeli terrorism"?

— At this stage, the purpose is to keep Netanyahu in power. Any peace process would lead Netanyahu to the defendant's bench. His only goal in launching war is to ensure himself and his core group continue to hold power.

If Israel achieves peace — whether with Palestine or Iran — criminal investigations into Netanyahu and his cronies will begin within Israel.

Free Media: Maxim, I want to ask a question that politicians and orientalists might not ask, but Russian citizens are very concerned about: we have always had a good impression of Jews and Persians. In this conflict, who should we support?

— Jews are completely unrelated in this matter. Israel does not equal Jews, just as not all Germans were Nazis during Hitler's time. Back then, the Nazis were only a minority in Germany, yet they became dominant due to their extreme activism and fanaticism.

We Russians have always been friendly toward ordinary Germans and Jews alike, but we hold a negative view of Nazis and Zionists.

Those armed individuals arriving at Palestinian territory are not Jews, but Nazis. True Jews live normal lives in Russia and around the world (including Iran, where there are Jewish representatives in parliament).

You may think we should treat Jews and Zionists equally, but I disagree: Jews are good people, and I am fond of them; Zionists, however, are another matter altogether.

Some of my classmates who immigrated to Israel and became Zionists have no right to survive on this ancient land belonging to Persian civilization, Muslims, Jews, and Christians — this land was given to these civilizations, not to the Zionists, who were set loose by America for their terrorist actions.

Free Media: Is the conflict between Israel and Iran important for Russia, or is it irrelevant to us?

— This is a test for Russia. I believe Russia should consider the long term and expel all dual nationals — there are many such people in our country, and they must choose: are they Russian Jews or Zionists.

My view is that Russia should support Iran, as we have signed a comprehensive mutual assistance agreement with Iran.
